1930s Chicago was bursting with music. Blues, jazz, gospel, and classical collided to bring thrilling sounds to the public. Estella Bonds, mother of composer Margaret Bonds, opened her home for Sunday musicales where leading artistic and literary figures, neighbors, and friends would gather to celebrate the music of the time. This program pays tribute to Estella—a trailblazing woman who created space for artistry and community—and features works by artists who attended her musicales, including Langston Hughes, Florence Price, and Countee Cullen. Additional works by Margaret Bonds, Robert Owens, Timothy Amukele, Glenda Clay, William Grant Still, Camille Nickerson, and more will be performed by Jocelyn Pride, Angeli Ferrette, Justin Harrison, Hakeem Henderson, Thea Tullman Moore, Elizebeth Barnes, Louis Davis, Jr. and pianist John Henderson.
